Just Right Living Project, a nine-week afterschool program for students fourth through ninth grades, teaches architecture, engineering, urban design and sustainability
What: The Just Right Living Project (JRLP / #JRLP16) is a nine-week afterschool program that will engage students in a project-based learning experience. The program incorporates STEM/STEAM careers: math, architecture, engineering, technology, construction, urban planning and sustainability. Students will use sketching and 3D technology to design a just-right sized house for a Detroit neighborhood, based on their family size, career, and other lifestyle requirements.
Who: POWEROrg Math (www.powertheyouth.org), SpaceLab Detroit (www.spacelabdetroit.com) and The Mannik & Smith Group (www.manniksmithgroup.com) collaborated to develop the program. Techtown (www.techtowndetroit.org) is the location sponsor.
Why: In April of 2016, POWEROrg Math and SpaceLab Detroit celebrated Architecture Week with Detroit area students. During the 2-1/2 hour program, students learned ratio and scale, sketching, space planning and 3D design. They enjoyed the short session immensely and asked for a regular program to attend weekly.
Who Should Attend: Detroit area students in the 4th through 9th grade. Limited to 20 students. Parents are invited to sit in at the sessions. Mentors and professionals are also welcome to share their time and experiences.
Cost: Family investment is $45 per student. (Valued at $250) A discount is available for two or more students from the same family.
When: Tuesdays, September 13, 2016 through November 15, 2016. There will be a virtual introduction conference call on Saturday, September 10, 2016. We will not meet on November 8 (Election Day).
Where: Techtown, 440 Burroughs St., Suite 370, Detroit, MI 48202
